DOLLARWAY ROAD Drawing its name from
the rumored cost of one dollar per running foot
to build the road in 1913-14 (actually $1.38),
the road is historically significant as the long-
est rural concrete highway in the U.S. at the
time, running 23 miles from Pine Bluff to Red-
field. The smooth pavement attracted “lead-
footed” drivers, which led to another roadway first. When residents along the highway were unable to persuade authorities to set a speed limit, they banded together and solved the problem by staking a 2-by-8 timbers across the 9-ft.-wide pavement, creating the first-ever “speed bumps.” The road was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
HESTAND STADIUM is a unique, cov- ered structure that anchors the fair- grounds, located at 420 North Blake Street, Pine Bluff, where the Southeast Arkansas District Fair and Rodeo has been held for almost a century. The an- nual event features livestock shows, nightly rodeo competitions and a gigan- tic midway. The venue hosts other events throughout the year.
