HOOD BUILDING is the current name of a historic commercial building at 100 Main Street in downtown Pine Bluff. It was the original home of the Merchants and Planters Bank. The two-story brick building, de- signed by Thomas A. Harding of Little Rock and built in 1892, features a hip roof and a turret at the northeast corner. Topped by a bell-shaped roof, the turret has stone arched openings at the base, providing access to the building entrance. A distinctive local example of Victorian Ro- manesque architecture, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
GRANT COUNTY COURTHOUSE is the county’s fourth courthouse on this site. The first two, of 1871 and 1880, were wooden buildings. The third, built in 1881, was demolished to make way for the current structure. Completed in 1964, the building is a mod- ern interpretation of the Colonial Revival style with a two-story central block flanked by dependencies connected by hyphens. The tall cupola houses a clock that was preserved from the old building, at the insistence of local residents who depended on the clock’s chiming to regulate their days.
OAK GROVE SCHOOL is a historic
school building in rural eastern Grant
County, about 6 miles east of Sheri-
dan. It is a single-story wood frame
structure, with a hip roof and novelty
siding. It was built in 1938 with fund-
ing from the Works Progress Adminis-
tration. Originally divided into four
classrooms, it was used as a school
until 1950, and is now home to the Center Grove United Methodist Church. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located at 7351 Highway 270 E, Sheridan, AR 72150
