GRANT COUNTY B-17 VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK is located at the crash site of a U.S. Army Air Corps B-17F that had left Salina, Kansas, on March 12, 1943 bound for Florida. At 3:40pm, the aircraft went down, killing all nine crew aboard. The site was marked with a stone, but was forgotten and became overgrown – until 2011, when a concerted volun- teer effort gave birth to a memorial park featuring a full-scale replica of the ill-fated aircraft. The park is located at 1846 Grant 51, near Sheridan.
JENKINS FERRY BATTLE- GROUND STATE PARK is op- erated by the Arkansas De- partment of Parks & Tourism. This is the site of the “bloodi- est battle west of the Missis- sippi,” fought on April 31, 1864 between General Frederick Steele’s Union forces and General E. Kirby Smith’s Con- federate army. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been established as a national his- toric landmark. The roadside park is located just east of the Saline River in southwestern Grant County along Highway 46 South, between Sheridan and Leola. The park offers out- door exhibits, picnic sites, trails, a boat-launch ramp to the Saline River, and is open to the public daily until 10:00PM.
